CRIME PREVENTION

Event Provides VIN Etching on UTVs, Motorcycles

Posted

Las Cruces police and The Power Center are co-hosting a free vehicle identification number etching and VIN inspection event on Saturday specifically for utility terrain vehicles, side-by-sides and motorcycles.

The free Crime Prevention Event will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 26, at The Power Center, 2000 N. Telshor Blvd. Las Cruces residents with a properly licensed UTV, side-by-side or motorcycle are welcome to attend. Attendees are encouraged to practice social distancing and wear face-coverings during the event.

VIN etching is a countermeasure to motor vehicle theft. Etching the vehicle’s VIN onto different areas of the vehicle reduces the value of a stolen vehicle and increases the likelihood that a stolen vehicle can be identified and recovered.

VIN etching is typically applied to vehicle windshields and windows, but the Las Cruces Police Department now has the ability to etch VINs onto painted metal surfaces in such a fashion that does not harm the vehicle’s finish and is virtually invisible to the naked eye. The VIN is visible, however, when exposed to an ultraviolet light source.

Most insurance companies encourage VIN etching, and some provide discounts for vehicles that are etched.
