First-rate response

Posted

To the editor: Thank you, Mayor Miyagishima and the Las Cruces City Council, for the first-rate handling of the current asylum seekers situation in our city.

It is the first duty of any government to ensure the safety of the people (citizens, tourists, asylum seekers) within our city limits.

In the past few months the federal government has literally “dumped” thousands of processed asylum seekers onto our city streets without contacting our local government ahead of time, thus leaving immigrants helpless without any means to provide for their own nourishment or funding to move out to places across the U.S.

With the help of Assistant Manager David Dollahon and Fire Chief Eric Enriquez and his team, an old armory was outfitted for use in housing and administering to the needs of stranded immigrants.

Nonprofit organizations like Casa de Peregrinos, The Gospel Rescue Mission, El Calvario Church and hundreds of local citizens volunteered time and money to the cause.

We are proud to call this compassionate city our home. We will pressure the White House to replace the funds the city used for this empathetic and safety undertaking.
