ArtForms member awards announced

ArtForms Artists Association of New Mexico, the Las Cruces-based arts group that puts on For the Love of Art Month each year, has announced the winners of its member shows at three local venues.

The winners are

• First place: Deborah Sperry for her piece titled “Devil’s Golf Course;

• Second place: Jeri Desrochers for “Questa Farm”;

• Third place: Noël Sandino for “The Explorer”; and

• Two honorable mentions to photographer Mel Stone and watercolorist Laurie Churchill.

The show was judged by New Mexico State University art professor Tauna Cole-Dorn.

“As president of ArtForms, I have found out what an incredible task it is to put on such an amazing event, our annual For the Love of Art month-long celebration,” said Noël Sandino. “We as the board and volunteer members work hard to bring everything together as a dedicated team. From communications to advertising to promoting, somehow it all comes together in the end and I have to say that the membership show of 2020 is fabulous. There is so much talent among our group. I highly recommend going to each of the three venues to see all of the show. Then spend time visiting your favorite artists in their studios to learn about their processes and maybe even select a piece for your home or business. But most of all, enjoy the month and all of the events going on around town this year. Everything is in the Guide, and you can even download it from the website.”

Artist shares LGBTQ+ experience at Branigan Cultural Center

Artist and social worker Chantelle Yazzie will present her artistic works and perspective on being an LGBTQ+ artist in the Las Cruces community, 1-2 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 15, at Branigan Cultural Center (BCC), 501 N. Main St. downtown.

Following her presentation, attendees are invited to visit the “Standing in the Light exhibit” featuring local LGBTQ+ artists at BCC.

Yazzie is from Heart Butte, N.M., and is Diné (Navajo). Some of her art pieces have focused on social justice and bringing Indigenous social and health disparities to light. She earned her bachelor’s degree in social work from Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan and her master’s degree in social work from New Mexico State University.

Yazzie works with Las Cruces Public Schools, where she uses play and art therapy to assist special-education students. Yazzie is a licensed social worker and clinician in Las Cruces, and she owns her own photography business.

Artforms Artists Association of New Mexico continues with its 22^nd annual For the Love of Art Month throughout February at galleries and other locations throughout Las Cruces, Mesilla and the entire area.

See the event guide at www.artformsnm.org/floa for a complete list of events and activities, including dates, times and locations (maps are included, with galleries grouped by geographic location).

Tours are generally 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturdays and noon-4 p.m. on Sundays, although hours may vary at some venues. There will be demonstrations and works of art in progress during the tours, plus opportunities to talk to participating artists. Look for the blue flags at participating studios.
