For the Love of Art Month with the Las Cruces Museum of Art

Posted

The Las Cruces Museum of Art will host several virtual programs throughout the month of February to celebrate “For the Love of Art Month”. These programs are free, open to the public, and will take place on the Zoom platform. Please email Bryan Lee at BLee@las-cruces.org for more information.

On Wednesday, February 3 at 1pm MST, a demonstration of the "SoulCollage" expressive arts practice will be presented by local artist and educator Jan Hampton. Founded by Seena B. Frost, the SoulCollage method develops creativity and intuition, encourages self-discovery, and provides personal guidance. Registration is required to attend the demonstration, and a material list will be provided for attendees who are interested in trying SoulCollage at home. Contact BLee@las-cruces.org.

Friday, February 12 at 4pm MST, we will feature artists from the upcoming Geometric Aljamia exhibition at the Museum of Art who will discuss their work and lead us through a virtual gallery tour. This exhibition is a cross-cultural collaboration that addresses how Medieval connections between the Islamic world and Europe during the Golden Age of the Islamic Civilization (8th Century-13th Century) continue to be relevant and vibrant in the 21st Century. Tune in on Wednesday, February 17 at 2pm MST for a presentation about the permanent collections of the Las Cruces Museum System and all the work that happens behind the scenes. Collections Manager Sarah Thomson and Collections Assistants will highlight their projects including the research and digitization of the fine art collection, sponsored by a grant from the Henry Luce Foundation. On Tuesday, February 23 at 1pm MST, a lecture will be presented on "The World of Papercut Art" by artist and educator Susan Leviton. Papercut art is found in cultures all over the world with many unique styles and adaptations. A common trait in many papercut styles is intricate designs cut into a single sheet of paper.
