THE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF SOUTHERN NEW MEXICO

Foundation event nets $2,800 for La Casa

The Community Foundation of Southern New Mexico – in conjunction with local philanthropists – recently hosted its second “100 Who Give Las Cruces” event and awarded $2,800 to La Casa, Inc.

“It’s inspiring for us to see how giving Las Cruces is, and how much they help us so we can continue our mission to end domestic violence,” said Pamela Strobbe, La Casa’s event, volunteer and donations coordinator.

The funds from “100 Who Give” will help cover client services for the organization – something Strobbe says is La Casa’s top priority. “The need for assistance never ends, so these funds will be used to assist families – children and adults – who reach out to La Casa.”

Providing new grant opportunities for local nonprofit organizations is just one of the many ways the foundation is growing and sustaining its impact in the region. To ensure everyone in the community has a means to give back, the CFSNM acts as a cornerstone for a series of giving circles, including “100 Who Give Las Cruces.”

The concept of “100 Who Give Las Cruces” is designed for community members who are looking for a philanthropic outlet but are unable to give back in a traditional manner, like volunteering.

Each person who reserved their spot for the event brought a blank check for $100 and the name of a local nonprofit or cause that they wanted their money to support. Three charities were chosen at random, and the person who selected the chosen charity was given time to speak about why they support it.

In the end, the group voted to decide which of the three charities received all the $100 checks – and it all happened in less than 100 minutes.

For each event, there are only 100 reserved seats – allowing for an impact of $10,000 dollars if all 100 seats are filled.

“It’s a progressive approach to grant making and providing funds for our local nonprofit organizations,” said Terra V. Winter, Chief Executive Officer and President of the Community Foundation of Southern New Mexico. “Our hope is to show the community how easy it can be to make a great impact.”

Winter said the events thus far have been successful, thanks to the dedicated team of local philanthropists who help coordinate and share the opportunities, creating a “ripple of philanthropy” within the community.

At the first 100 Who Give Las Cruces meeting in September 2019, Boys & Girls Club of Las Cruces was chosen to receive the funds – a total of $3,300 from the event – but recently, an attendee donated an additional $5,000, raising the total donation to more than $8,000.

“Every dollar goes a long way, and this is proof that there is power in numbers,” said Ashley Echavarria, executive director of the Boys & Girls Club of Las Cruces.

The next “100 Who Give Las Cruces” event is scheduled to take place April 14, at Icebox Brewing Company on Picacho Ave. For more information or to RSVP to the next event, contact Jordan Allen, the foundation’s director of impact and outreach, at jordan@CFSNM.org.
