The nonprofit Mesilla Valley Film Society announced a screening of director Jacques Audiard’s musical, comedic crime drama, “Emelia Pérez” at the historic Fountain Theatre in Mesilla, from Dec. 1-3.
Based on Audiard’s opera libretto of the same name, the story centers on a group of women in Mexico, including a cartel leader who transitions into a woman. Karla Sofía Gascón of Spain, an openly transgender woman, shared the Best Actress award with her three castmates – Zoe Saldaña, Selena Gomez, and Adriana Paz – at the 2024 Festival de Cannes, where the movie also won the Jury Prize.
The film is streaming on Netflix, but MVFS President Nancy Sharp said in a news release, “A film like ‘Emilia Pérez’ is made for a movie theater. Its visuals, music and choreography are best experienced on the big screen, where the audience’s energy enhances the emotional impact.”
The movie opened at Cannes in May and has been streaming on Netflix since Nov. 13.
The movie is rated R for some violent content, sexual material and adult language, per a news release. The running time is 132 minutes and the film is in English.
Show times are 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, Dec. 1-3, at the Fountain Theatre, 2469 Calle de Guadalupe, south of Mesilla’s historic plaza.
