Free pet clinics are Feb. 19 at Field of Dreams

The Animal Services Center of the Mesilla Valley (ASCMV) will provide free DHPP and FVRCP vaccinations for Doña Ana County area pets in a drive-through clinic, 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 19, in the parking lot at the LCPS Field of Dreams, 2300 Tashiro Drive (enter from Motel Boulevard on the west).

The free vaccines are made possible through Petco Love's national vaccination initiative, which is providing two million free pet vaccines to existing animal welfare partners, including ASCMV, for family pets in need, ASCMV said in a news release.

Rabies and Bordetella vaccines and microchips will be available for $10, and, thanks to sponsors ASA Architects, Jaynes Corp. and Elks Lodge #1119, the first 250 microchips are free, ASCMV said. After that, microchipping is $10 per pet.

Parvovirus and distemper in dogs and panleukopenia in cats — the most prevalent deadly diseases affecting pets — are preventable with a simple vaccine. An estimated 30 percent of pet parents do not take their pet to a veterinarian annually for preventative care, the news release said.

At this local drive-through clinic, ASCMV aims to vaccinate 600 pets:

To participate in the clinic, dogs must be leashed and cats must be in carriers, ASCMV said. For DHPP, FVRCP, and Bordetella vaccines, animals must be older than eight weeks. For rabies vaccines, animals must be older than 12 weeks.

“Thanks to Petco Love, we can offer these important vaccines at no cost to pet owners,” said ASCMV Executive Director Clint Thacker. “We urge community members to take advantage of this no-cost resource to ensure the health and wellness of our community’s pets.”
