FULL BUCK MOON

Full moon is July 4; 2020 is now half over

Posted

The Full Buck Moon occurs at 10:44 p.m. on Saturday, July 4, just as America celebrates its 244th birthday!

The calendar year reached the hallway point on Wednesday, July 1, the 183rd day of 2020, which is a leap year. As of Friday, July 3, there are 181 days remaining in the year.

Looking ahead from July 3, it’s 81 days until the fall equinox (Sept. 22), 120 days until Halloween, 121 days until the end of Daylight Saving Time (Nov. 1), 123 days until the general election (Nov. 3), 146 days until Thanksgiving (Nov. 26), 175 days until Christmas and 181 until the last day of the year.

Among other celebrations, July is national Anti-Boredom Month, Cell Phone Courtesy Month, Hot Dog Month, Ice Cream Month, Independent Retailer Month and Horseradish Month.

July also an important month historically for New Mexico. Pat Garrett shot and killed Billy the Kid July 14, 1881 in Fort Sumner; on July 8, 1947, Roswell Army Air Field issued a news release saying it had recovered a “flying disc” near Corona, New Mexico, riveting worldwide attention on what has become known as the Roswell UFO Incident; and on July 16, 1945, the experimental atomic bomb called “Fat Boy” was set off a few seconds before 5:30 a.m. at Trinity Site, about 35 miles about 118 miles north of Las Cruces, on what was then the United States Army Air Forces Alamogordo Bombing and Gunnery Range and is now part of White Sands Missile Range.
