Fun fundraiser draws more participants than ever

The Taste of Las Cruces fundraiser event held Thursday, May 12, marked the first time in history the function was sold out, said Bianca Menchaca, Casa de Peregrinos (emergency food program) development coordinator.

“We had more than 500 people,” she said. “The silent auction was also a tremendous hit. I could not ask for anything else.”

Many area restaurants and catering organizations were represented presenting samples of their best fare for participants to taste.

“There were a lot of restaurants we haven’t seen for a while,” she said.

Also, several new businesses had wares to share at the event including the Kind Bread Co., Willow + Blaine and Sassy Grass Juice Bar & Lounge.

The event has been run by the Rotary clubs of Las Cruces which have been uniting to bring the food creators together for 14 years to raise funds for Casa de Peregrinos. The food sampling event occurred at the Las Cruces Convention Center.

Casa de Peregrinos or “House of Pilgrims” operates as an emergency food pantry that focuses on serving Doña Ana County, with a main location on West Amador Avenue in Las Cruces. Although the principal pantry is in Las Cruces, it also supports mobile pantries in 13 colonias: Anthony, Berino, Chaparral, Doña Ana, Butterfield, Hatch, La Mesa, Mesquite, Organ, Garfield, Radium Springs, Rincón and Tortugas.
