GISD’s Mesquite Elementary honored as National Blue Ribbon School

The New Mexico Legislature honored three elementary schools as National Blue Ribbon Schools at the state capitol Feb. 3, including Mesquite Elementary School in Mesquite, N.M., part of the Gadsden Independent School District (GISD).

Those representing GISD at the honoring ceremony were Superintendent Travis Dempsey and school board members Laura Salazar Flores (president), Daniel Castillo (vice president), Claudia Rodriguez (secretary) and Arlean Murillo.

The other two schools honored are elementaries in Hobbs and Farmington.

The GISD officials met with Lt. Gov. Howie Morales and New Mexico Public Education Department Sec. Kurt Steinhaus and received certificates of recognition by state Rep. Raymundo Lara and state Sen. Bill Soules, both D-Doña Ana. Lara lives in Chamberino. Soules, who is chair of the state Senate Education Committee, is from Las Cruces.

Both chambers also honored Mesquite Elementary School Principal Angela Silvaggio, who is one of seven principals in the nation to receive the Terrel Bell Award for excellence in leadership.

The U.S. Department of Education’s National Blue Ribbon Schools Program “recognizes public and private elementary, middle and high schools based on their overall academic excellence or their progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups,” according to www2.ed.gov/programs/nclbbrs/index.html.
