‘Give with Riv’ event to help domestic violence shelters

Posted

Las Cruces musician and entrepreneur Rivers Ventura has created an event to benefit those in need.

“Give with Riv” will be held noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 28, at The Range, 3217 El Camino Real Road in Las Cruces.

Ventura said he will be playing during the event, and will have tables set up to accept donations of food, clothing, toiletries, snacks, nonperishable foods, plastic utensils, trash bags, dish soap, menstrual products, oral-care products, hair ties, bedsheets, toys, diapers and other items.

Everything collected at the event will be donated to domestic violence shelters in Las Cruces and El Paso, Ventura said.

“I’m putting together the event for three primary reasons,” Ventura said.

“My mother unfortunately passed away last month and she had been a victim of domestic violence from previous partners in her life,” Ventura said. “She was a huge advocate for these shelters and was always helping in any way she could. I would love to continue that tradition that my mom started and pick up right where she left off.

“As a local musician, being a community figure comes with a lot of influence,” Ventura said. “I would love to use that natural persuasion to convince people to give to those who need it. I believe that my actions could influence not only my fans but other bands in our area to do the same.”

Ventura turned 20 earlier this year, and is “your typical broke college student,” he said. “I want to show our youth community that you don’t need a lot of money to donate or organize these types of events. I feel most people my age don’t do events like these because they feel it has to be done by a big corporation or foundation. I want to show them that anybody can put together an event for the greater good of our community.”

Ventura recorded his first single, “Lollygaggin',” which he also wrote, in April 2020. He now has two extended-play records and eight singles on a variety of streaming platforms.

Ventura will be performing live at Friday, June 3, at Plaza de Las Cruces.
