Great Grub in the Great Outdoors

Posted

Head to Glenwood for good, old-fashioned family fun at the annual Dutch Oven Gathering from 10 a.m.-3 p.m., Saturday, April 12, where teams of cooks prepare meals the age-old way – in large cast iron kettles over charcoal. This year’s event will again be held at Glenwood Community Park on Catwalk Road (Route 174) off Highway 180.

Hot coals and open fires are the secret to perfect outdoor cooking.

The teams come from New Mexico and adjoining states, and the cooks love to chat and share info about traditional and updated dishes. Each team prepares a full meal – a meat or main dish, a side dish, a bread, and a dessert. Water, lemonade, or coffee will be supplied with the meal.

Browse around and find the meal you would like most, then purchase a ticket for $15 per meal. Menus are posted at each site and in the pavilion where tickets are sold. Buy your tickets early as meals sometimes sell out. Serving begins about 2 p.m. at each camp where the meals are being prepared.

Glenwood is located on Highway 180 northwest of Silver City in the Gila National Forest. While you’re here, take time to explore the beauty of the wilderness. Glenwood Ranger District is home to numerous trails including the Catwalk National Recreation Trail (which is handicapped accessible for the first mile).
