Guest conductor to lead Las Cruces symphony in 2 shows of classics

Guest conductor Gene Chang will lead the Las Cruces Symphony Orchestra (LCSO) during live performances at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 30, and 3 p.m. Sunday, May 1, in Atkinson Recital Hall, NMSU Music Building, 1075 N. Horseshoe St. on campus.

The Classics 4 concert will include “Le Tombeau de Couperin” by French computer, conductor and pianist Maurice Ravel (1875-1937), “Appalachian Spring” by American composer, conductor, writer, teacher and Academy Award and Pulitzer Prize winner Aaron Copland (1900-90), “Cantus in Memory of Benjamin Britten” by Arvo Pärt and Mozart’s “Symphony No. 36.”

Pärt, 86, is an Estonian composer. Edward Benjamin Britten, Baron Britten, (1913-76) was an English composer, conductor and pianist.

LCSO’s Symphony Gala is June 10 at New Mexico Farm and Ranch Heritage Museum, 4100 Dripping Springs Road. Tickets are $55. The event includes dinner, a cash bar, a DJ, dancing, a silent auction and the revealing of the symphony’s new director, who will succeed Lonnie Klein.
