The Doña Ana County Humane Society (DACHS) has received two grants – one shared with another local organization – to expand its service to pets and pet owners.
PetSmart grant
With a $40,000 grant from PetSmart Charities, the Spay Neuter Action Program (SNAP) DACHS are collaborating to support pets and pet parents in need of services through the Animal Relief Fund and spay/neuter vouchers, DACHS said in its spring newsletter.
“Pets are family, and we know in times of uncertainty, pet parents will do whatever they can to care for their beloved pets,” said Kelly Balthazor, community grants manager at PetSmart Charities. “We’re thrilled to support this work to make affordable veterinary care accessible to the Doña Ana County community. Whether for emergency care, spaying and neutering services or preventive care to avoid costly treatment, these two programs working in tandem will ensure pets in need receive essential care.”
Pets for the Elderly Foundation
The Pets for the Elderly Foundation (PFE) is continuing its funding of DACHS’ Pets for Seniors program with a $4,000 grant.
“With the tremendous need for veterinary assistance for low-income families, PFE expanded its reach and offered participating organizations the opportunity to apply for grant funding that would specifically assist senior pet owners age 60+ with veterinary care assistance,” the newsletter said.
The $4,000 can be used over the next six months to provide Animal Relief Fund veterinary assistance vouchers to under-resourced senior citizens in Doña Ana County.
“We are proud to continue our partnership with DACHS,” said Pets for the Elderly Foundation Executive Director Susan Kurowski. ”They have been a model participant in our program for many years, so we could not be more pleased that they will be one of the first to utilize our enhanced program for veterinary needs for senior citizens. We look forward to seeing the results of their work within the community, using the PFE program."
The Pets for Seniors program helps seniors find companionship and helps shelter pets become adopted. The Pets for Seniors program covers $25 of all adoption costs, up to $2,000 per year, the DACHS newsletter said.
$64,000 in assistance provided in 2020
In 2020, DACHS managed to provide more than $64,000 in assistance through its Animal Relief Fund through vouchers for medications, vaccinations and veterinary care to pets in need. DACHS’ Ruff to Ready program trainer Hope Movsesian assisted owners of recently adopted shelter dogs with socially distanced and remote training sessions in 2020 to help the dogs adjust to their new homes, the DACHS newsletter said.
