JIM BOBS BBQ

Jim Bobs BBQ opens at Las Cruces Airport

Posted

A second Jim Bobs BBQ location opened at Las Cruces International Airport in late 2020 with a mouth-watering menu that is available to “eat in (depending on the state’s red-to-green framework) and cart out.” (I looked for a fly-through window; I guess that’s coming later.)

I sampled the fare for the first time recently while visiting Airport Administrator Andy Hume.

Let me summarize the dining experience in a single word: “Yum!” Good barbecue – and Jim Bob’s is always outstanding – is about as good eatin’ as there is to me.

Andy ordered the “Haystack,” burger, which includes a seven-ounce patty with lettuce, tomato, onion and cheddar cheese. He had potato salad as a side.

I went for the “Wholly Cow,” choosing brisket, sliced sausage and chicken from the meat menu that also includes pulled pork and ribs. I also got two sides, vinaigrette coleslaw and smoked cream corn.

Owner Jim Leon also offers a variety of sauces. I tried several, and they were all great.

In addition to the various meats served individually and in combinations, you can get Spicy Bites and a Bowl ‘o Chili. Breakfast includes a croissant or biscuit sandwich, cinnamon rolls and muffins.

In addition to those already mentioned, side dishes include jalapeno baked beans, seasoned fries, mac and cheese, sweet potato fries, onion rings and cornbread.

The airport Jim Bobs is open 6 a.m.-2 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday.

It’s one more attraction at the airport, which is 10 miles west of downtown and offers spectacular views of the Organ Mountains and the desert landscape.

If you’re lucky, you’ll get to dine surrounded by firefighters from nearby Las Cruces Fire Station #7, pilots and airport crew and members of the military. They were all there when I visited Jim Bobs with Andy. I also got to meet Immortal Data Incorporated President and CEO Dale Amon, whose office is right next to Andy’s.
