JUNIOR LEAGUE OF LAS CRUCES

Junior League raising funds for children’s literacy

Posted

The Junior League of Las Cruces (JLLC) is raising awareness of New Mexico’s childhood literacy rates as it raises money to improve them through the league’s March 8-12 Little Black Dress Initiative.

The second annual Little Black Dress Initiative is a social media-driven awareness and online fundraising campaign during which community advocates and JLLC members wear the same black outfit for five consecutive days with a button that says, “Ask me about my little black dress” to spark conversations that allow advocates to share information with the community,” JLLC said in news release.

“New Mexico consistently ranks 50th in economic well-being and 50th in education,” the news release said. “Only one in 300 low-income children owns his or her own book, and 30 percent of New Mexico’s children live in poverty, nearly double the national rate. Because of this, 80 percent of fourth graders in New Mexico are not proficient in reading, which is 14 percent higher than the national rate.”.

This year, JLLC said it hopes to add a second school to the “A Book of My Own” program, eventually expanding to all schools in Doña Ana County.
