Las Cruces entrepreneur launches online community calendar

Posted

LAS CRUCES - Las Cruces entrepreneur and professional planner Naoma Staley has launched an online community calendar that she hopes will help area residents of all ages and interests find out what’s going on in Las Cruces and Mesilla and feel a sense of connection and belonging.

Staley’s Cruceño Calendar (crucenocalendar.com) is free to find an event or to enter information about one. (Scroll down to the bottom of the home page.)

Staley said all events are welcome for inclusion in the calendar provided they don’t cause harm to anyone.

The site includes these events categories: arts; children and youth; fairs, conferences and expos; family-friendly; food; meetups; networking; sports; and think local.

The calendar launched Sept. 13 and already includes everything from yoga, billiards and cycling to live music, bingo and the Picacho Mountain Outdoor Festival. Staley is connecting with groups, organizations, individuals and websites to learn about events to add to the calendar and to encourage community members to use it.

Staley started the calendar because in her work as a transportation and a community planner since moving to Las Cruces about 10 years ago she has frequently been asked why there is no coordination of information about local events.

“It’s a legitimate frustration,” Staley said. She also thinks the calendar will allow newcomers to network more quickly with others with whom they share common interests so they can feel more at home in the community.

“It took me four years to feel like I fit in here,” Staley said. “Now I love it and I never want to move.”

Staley hopes to expand the calendar by adding a page for local venues before the end of 2019.

Staley has a Bachelor of Science degree in geography and GIS (map making) from California State Polytechnic University and a Master’s in sociology and women’s studies from New Mexico State University.

“I’ve been working for over 10 years in jobs that require people to collaborate with one another to create the best possible outcome for themselves, their jobs, and ultimately the community,” Staley says on her personal website, naomastaley.com.
