Las Cruces homebuilder donates $18,000 to three local nonprofits

Hakes Brothers, a regional homebuilder headquartered in Las Cruces, has donated $18,000 to three local nonprofits: El Caldito Soup Kitchen, Las Cruces Gospel Rescue Mission, Inc. and La Casa, Inc., a domestic violence shelter.

The donations were provided as part of the homebuilder’s philanthropic initiative to give back to the communities where building takes place, Hakes Brothers said in a news release.

“Since the COVID-19 pandemic, El Caldito has had to change the way we run the organization,” said El Caldito Volunteer Coordinator/Kitchen Manager Diane D’Ambrosio. “Donations like this ensure we can purchase items we do not normally buy, such as face masks, Styrofoam to-go containers and bottled water. We are so grateful for every donation we receive and are amazed every day by the generosity of the businesses and individuals in our community. These donations make it possible for us to focus on our mission to feed those who are food insecure.”

Driven by a mission to provide a healthy meal each day in a safe and clean environment for any person who is hungry, El Caldito Soup Kitchen has been serving the Las Cruces community for 36 years. The organization provides 85,000 meals to the community annually, funded predominantly through donations. While the kitchen’s thrift store revenue covers some operational costs, it is donations from the community that provide most of what is required to help those in need.

“Much like El Caldito, the Gospel Rescue Mission has incurred extra costs to provide ‘to-go meals for much of the homeless population,” said Gospel Rescue Mission Executive Director Henry Young. “We are happy to offer something for those who are not living at the mission. One meal is usually hot in to-go containers and the other two are sack lunches with a drink and food. We would like to thank the Hakes Brothers for their generosity in helping a portion of society that can be overlooked. The mission wants them to have continued success in their business and their generosity.”

“It takes a community to get things done,” said La Casa, Inc. Executive Director Henry Brutus. “The Hakes Brothers understand this. La Casa, Inc. is not successful without the community. We care about the community, and we want to ensure our community is a great place to live and do business. We are grateful to the Hakes brothers for their support. COVID-19 has tested our capacity and ability to increase service provision and still provide quality services. Fortunately, our team has been resilient and has risen to the challenge. Generous supporters like the Hakes Brothers validate our commitment to a healthy and violence-free Las Cruces.”

While supporting the local community has long been a priority for Hakes Brothers, it became even more crucial this year, given the unique economic and health issues that resulted from the pandemic, the news release said.

“As a homebuilder, we believe in doing our part to build up communities and assist in providing a positive impact,” Hakes Brothers President Kimball Hakes said. “The work that these organizations are doing to provide food, shelter and therapy to those in need is truly outstanding.”
