LAS CRUCES - The grand opening of the new Trails End Gallery and Studio will be 5-8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, at 1732 N. Mesquite St. in the city’s historic Mesquite District.
The building is owned by Las Cruces artist Gary Biel and has completed a three-year renovation of an old adobe home to include a five-room fine art gallery and seven rooms for artist studios.
Las Cruces artist Robert Highsmith, whose works will be featured at the gallery, said this helps fill the void left by the closing of the Cutter Gallery, where Highsmith’s art was displayed for 16 years.
“I've had many memorable and successful shows with them,” he said. “They were instrumental in getting a piece of my work in the Capitol Arts Foundation as well as [my receiving] the Governor’s Award for Art in 2011. The Cutter Gallery has been a big influence on the art scene within the state and within Las Cruces.”
For the grand opening, “a large patio with sail-shade coverings in the back of the gallery accents the gallery space where live entertainment and refreshments will be served,” Highsmith said. He and fellow watercolor artists Penny Simpson and John Schooley will be joined by basket and gourd artist Patricia Black for the occasion.
