Las Cruces museums host STEM programs, Transportation Day (tire flipping!), ‘Voice of Two Spirit’ exhibits in May

The Las Cruces Museum of Nature and Science (MONAS), the city Railroad Museum (RRM) and Branigan Cultural Center (BCC) have events and openings for the whole family in May.

MONAS: STEM programs

The programs are free but require registration in advance at the MONAS atrium desk before the listed registration deadlines. They are 1) 9-10 a.m. Thursdays: “Nature & Science Discovery Pre-K: Trace Fossils,” for ages 2-5, with an adult caregiver; 2) 10-11 a.m. May 7: “Saturday Family Science – Air-Zookas!” Learn about vortexes and make your own air vortex cannon. For ages 6 and up, with an adult caregiver; 3) 11 a.m. Saturdays, May 7, 14 and 21: “Live Animal Feedings,” Learn how different species of animals eat and what they eat. No registration required; and 4) 11 a.m.-noon Saturday, May 28: “Animal Encounters,” learn about the diverse world of amphibians and get up close to some museum residents. No registration required. RRM: Transportation Day

Transportation Day is 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, May 7, at RRM and includes activities, demonstrations and close encounters with race cars, motorsports, a fire truck, police units, transit buses and more. The event is free to attend and will include activities for all ages: 1) race car tire-changing demonstrations; meet and be photographed with Drew Cassidy, Caliche’s racecar driver, as she and her team flip racing tires; 2) Miniature barn raising: Help build a Western town that will go in the museum’s model railroad room; and 3) Painting model train cars: Customize a real model train car with stickers, painting and other supplies to take home. BCC: “The Voice of a Two Spirit”

A new exhibition, “The Voice of a Two Spirit,” which features the artwork of indigenous artist Marcy Angeles, is on view at BCC May 6 to July 16, 2022. The artwork reflects Angeles’ life experiences as an indigenous two spirit. BCC, 501 N. Main St. Downtown, is open 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday and 9 a.m.-4:30 -p.m. Saturday. There is no admission fee. BCC is accessible from RoadRUNNER Transit Route 1 Stop 1. Call 575-541-2154.
