Klein Park is the latest City Facility to receive free Wi-Fi as an extension of the City’s existing free public wireless Internet system already available at the Plaza de Las Cruces and all facilities connected by the City’s network. Residents benefit from the free service because it provides basic Internet access for mobile devices and laptop computers through WiFi. The service is intended for casual internet use to provide access to email, social media and websites.
“We’re very pleased with this accomplishment by the City’s Information Technology (IT) Department,” said Interim City Manager David Maestas. “Through this effort we have completed yet another strategic plan goal, which is to make the Internet more conveniently accessible to the public and to enhance the park’s use.”
The City’s IT Department installed the network infrastructure and an access point. The cost of the project was about $50,000, explained IT Department Director Scott Marr. “The City has provided free WiFi at most City facilities and the Plaza since June of 2019,” he said. “The Library and the City’s Senior Centers have provided free WiFi for many years.”
This service is not intended as a replacement for home or business class Internet service and has limited capacity. WiFi does not penetrate external walls or buildings very well. The further you are away from the park, the weaker the signal because it does not travel far. The free WiFi is identified as Public_CLC when accessing it from WiFi-enabled devices. Users have to agree to a terms of use agreement before being able to use the service.
