On Monday, Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham formally declared an emergency for Chaves County, opening $1 million in state dollars for local flood relief efforts. The funds come through two executive orders, one allocating $750,000 to New Mexico’s Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, and the other releasing $250,000 to the state National Guard.
Lujan Grisham traveled to Roswell Monday for updates from state and local officials. The state reports that more than 300 have been rescued and 38 hospitalized in addition to the two fatalities.
