Did you know late Las Cruces Public Schools Superintendent Karen Trujillo was a poet?

To honor her legacy in this medium, a poetry contest was established and opened to any LCPS senior, LCPS said in a news release.

Three LCPS poets from Organ Mountain High School (OMHS) will read the contest’s winning entries and receive prizes at 3 p.m. Thursday, May 12, at OMHS, 5700 Mesa Grande Drive.

Ben Trujillo from the Dr. Karen M Trujillo Memorial Foundation will attend to award students cash prizes, the news release said.

A jury of five area English teachers chose the following winners: first prize to Mariana Tablon for her poem “Self-Sabotage” ($500 prize); second prize to  Delilah Garcia for her poem “Overwhelmed” ($250); and third prize: Melaina Mittel for her poem “The Lies Are Before the Foothill” ($100).  All three are OMHS seniors.

The contest was coordinated by Las Cruces and OMHS educator Tim Staley.
