Letter: City Council not responsive to individual needs

Posted

City Council elections are coming up. Council members look after the City’s growth and development, and currently Las
Cruces has the following: :The Airport Action Plan, Las Cruces Innovation & Industrial Park Development Plan, Climate
Action Plan, Elevate Las Cruces Plan and at its heart, The City of Las Cruces Strategic Action Plan 2001-2006. Council
representatives are planners, advisors and information-gatherers; representation of a district has no practical application.

There is a very small ”patch” in one of the 6 Districts; an area of about 10 connected streets, where many people walk and
sidewalks are intermittent. There have been numerous unsuccessful pleas to the City to upgrade these streets. Initially, the response was, “Your pavement condition index is too high.” In layman's terms, “you have more than enough tread on your
tires, so new ones are unnecessary.” That was over 7 years ago. Since then 2 City Council Reps have viewed the area,
even walked these streets and agreed that they are in very poor condition.

Still no response, not even an indication if the
area is scheduled to be repaired.. This is particularly annoying and frustrating since all the adjoining streets to this “patch”
have been upgraded within the last 6 years. Why is this little area ignored? What is my point?

Don’t go to your City council person with a practical issue. Instead, Ask them about future flights to Santa Fe, or what
new business has moved in, or what impact an electric car may have on local air quality ... just don’t ask for help getting
your streets repaired.
