New Mexico State (25-19) was unable to get the clutch hits on Tuesday, falling to New Mexico (31-16) 3-2. With the win, the Lobos take the season series 4-1.
The Aggies looked like they would pick up where they left off this past weekend in the bottom of the first inning, as Daniel Johnson blasted a leadoff homer to straight away center. Two batters later, Dan Hetzel unleashed on his own solo round-tripper to right, putting the Aggies up 2-0 early.
Both Steven Butts and Chris Butcher combined to pitch three solid innings out of the gate. Butcher got in a little trouble in the fourth as UNM got back-to-back base hits to lead off the frame. A sacrifice bunt moved both runners into scoring position. A ground out to second scored the run from third, and pulled the Lobos with one run.
UNM took the lead in the sixth as a leadoff walk and a double put runners in scoring position to start the inning. Both runs scored on single through the right side of the infield, putting them up 3-2.
Andy Frakes, Ruger Rodriguez and Tyler Erwin combined to shut down the Lobos in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings, respectively. The Aggie bullpen only allowed two hits over the last three innings, and stuck out three Lobos in the process.
After the first inning, the Aggies scattered four hits over the next eight innings. In total, NM State left seven runners on the bases.
The Aggies are back in action this weekend as the host Seattle U. in the final home series of the regular season and fight for a chance to take over first place in Western Athletic Conference.
