DOÑA ANA ARTS COUNCIL

Local students will perform in ‘Sleeping Beauty’ with touring Missoula Children’s Theatre

After a week of rehearsals, the Doña Ana Arts Council (DAAC) will host its 2021 Missoula Children’s Theatre (MCT) production of “Sleeping Beauty” at 3 p.m. and again at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, July 10, at Alma d’arte Charter High School, 402 W. Court Ave.

More than 50 local students will be part of this original production, said DAAC Executive Director Greg Smith.

Tickets are $7 for adults and $3 for children and will be sold at the door before each performance.

For more than 40 years, MCT, the nation’s largest touring children’s theater, has been on the road and will visit nearly 1,200 communities this year with up to 44 tour actor/directors teams, Smith said. The Las Cruces team is led by tour directors Joe Goldburn and Steven Thomas. Goldburn is a graduate of Lees McRae College in Banner Elk, North Carolina, where he obtained a bachelor’s degree in theater arts practicum. Since then, Goldburn has toured with several shows with MCT and various middle-school productions for Traveling Players Ensemble in Great Falls, Virginia. Thomas is a graduate of the University of Washington, with an extensive performance history.

“The MCT tour team will arrive at Alma d’arte Charter High School with a set, lights, costumes, props – everything it takes to put on a play except the cast,” Smith said.

DAAC has registered all cast members in advance, and Goldburn and Thomas will audition students for roles in the production. The cast will rehearse throughout the week in preparation for the two public performances.

MCT programming aims to improve creativity, social skills, goal achievement, communication skills and self-esteem through participation and collaboration.  MCT's mission is the development of life skills in children through participation in the performing arts.

All participants in the production will wear masks throughout the week because of the pandemic, Smith said. All costumes and set pieces will be laundered and disinfected prior to their arrival in Las Cruces. Traditional shared stage makeup will not be used. Attendees of the Saturday performances will be required to wear face coverings and follow social distancing guidelines.
