Longtime Organ Mountain High School cross country coach David Nuñez has garnered a new honor.

Nuñez, who has guided the cross country program at Organ Mountain and Oñate, as the school was previously named, for 27 years, was named the 2021 5A Boys Cross Country Coach of the Year by the New Mexico Track and Cross Country Coaches Association (NMTCCCA).

Nuñez will be given the award Saturday, Jan. 22, in Albuquerque.

His boys varsity team won six invitational meets this past fall, won its fourth straight district championship and took fourth place at the state championships. Top runner Brett Bybee won district and was third at state.

Andrew Parks, Jeron Wisner, Corbin Coombs and Jonathan Torres were named all-district, along with Bybee. Both Bybee and Torres were named all-star cross country seniors by the NMTCCCA.

Over the years, Nuñez has guided the Knights to district titles in boys varsity competition 16 times and 10 times in the girls.

“It was  a season and a team to remember,” Nuñez said. “This award is a result of their hard work and season achievements. I am humbly honored and truly grateful to coach such a special group of young men and women.

“Put aside the awards and trophies, and the bottom line is that they were not just good runners, but good students and people, which is what we strive to develop in our program,” Nuñez continued.
