Man Suspected of Breaking into Shed

Posted

Las Cruces police arrested a man suspected of breaking into a homeowner’s shed and walking away with three items that could be used as weapons.

Steven Najvar, 30, is charged with one count of aggravated burglary. The charge is a second-degree felony because he was armed with a potential deadly weapon after entering the shed.

About 8 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 9, Las Cruces police were dispatched to the report of a burglary in progress on the 1000 block of McFie Avenue. The homeowner told police that she viewed her video surveillance monitor which showed the door to her backyard shed was open. She then saw a man exit the shed at which time she confronted him.

The suspect left the woman’s property with two baseball bats and a hatchet that he stole from her shed.

A Las Cruces Police officer located the suspect, identified as Najvar, at the residence next door to where the burglary occurred. Najvar was armed with the hatchet, which was concealed in his waistband, when the arresting officer took him into custody.

Investigators later learned that Najvar also gained entry to a camper shell and rummaged through it before breaking into the shed.

Najvar was booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center where he is initially being held without bond.
