Malu Bender, who with her sister runs the MasArt, a frame and arts supply store, has opened a dispensary right next door. Bender and her son Ron have started MasBuds because they were called by the new opportunities offered in New Mexico.
“My son saw the opportunity and he said, ‘Mom, let’s go,’” Malu said. “We have a lot of space. We thought it was going to be easy. It’s not.”
But the mother/son team are determined to make the business flourish and have dedicated their energy to bring cannabis products as well as a variety of boutique pipes, jewelry, T-shirts and more to the community.
“It’s not a drug, it’s a lifestyle,” Malu said.
There are buds, gummies and wax for sale and a close-up magnified view to see what you are buying. All the product comes from farmers in New Mexico, she said. They cannot purchase from anywhere else.
Wax is a concentrated form that can be smoked or used other ways.
“It’s the new age stuff,” Ron said. “You can do it multiple ways, vape pen, cook, dab – this is live and doesn’t need to be activated, you can spread it like butter on bread.”
Using cannabis recreationally for his own issues, including anxiety, Ron said he never knew that much about the medical side of it, but he has been learning a lot.
“Working in the dispensary, I have had people come in and tell me a lot of amazing stories,” he said. “It is a medical thing for a lot of people.”
People tell him about the aliments that have been helped by cannabis.
“These ladies came in and said, ‘I take this specific strain and put it into my tea, or I rub this balm on my hand,’” he said. “All these stories have been amazing, just to hear how weed helps people in other parts of their life.”
About the burgeoning industry in New Mexico, Ron said he hopes “there’s enough cake for everyone out there that we can all enjoy our slice and be happy with it.”
