“Matilda,” the children’s novel the musical is based on, was written by Roald Dahl (1916-90), a British novelist and screenwriter, in 1988. The musical, staged by the Royal Shakespeare Company and written by Dennis Kelly, playwright, and Tim Minchin, composer and lyricist, premiered in London in 2011. That production continues at Cambridge Theatre. “Matilda” ran on Broadway 2013-17, and won Tony awards for book, featured actor and scenic design of a musical.

Dahl also wrote “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” and “James and Giant Peach.”

“Matilda” performances at LCCT are 7:30 p.m. Friday-Saturday, Feb. 10-11, 17-18 and 24-25, and 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 12, 19 and 26.
