Meerscheidt Recreation Center celebrates 50 years

The City of Las Cruces Parks and Recreation Department will offer a free community event to celebrate 50 years of athletics, recreation and fun at Meerscheidt Recreation Center, 1600 E. Hadley Ave., 9 a.m.- 1 p.m. Saturday, May 27.

Community members of all ages and abilities will have the opportunity to earn prizes while participating in various activities such as free throw and three-point contests, modified sand volleyball games, table tennis, concrete cornhole, soccer targets, pickleball instruction and play for beginners and the Parks and Rec Department mobile unit ninja course, the city said in a news release.

Sign-ups for activities will be at the event and participation is first come first served.

Access to weight room and regular Saturday activities will resume June 3, the city said.

The center was named for Hilmer Meerscheidt, who was born Dec. 5, 1894, in San Antonio, Texas.
