The Mesilla Valley Concert Band will have a free concert at 10 a.m. on Monday, July 4 at the New Mexico State University Music Building (Atkinson Recital Hall), 1075 N. Horseshoe, on the NMSU campus.
There is no charge to attend the performance. You can park in the lot in front of the Skeen Building just west of the music building.
The performance will feature about 70 musicians, including Mesilla Valley Concert Band (MVCB) members and members of the New Horizons Band of Las Cruces as well, said MVCB Director Dr. William Clark. Clark is the former head of the NMSU Music Department.
The Voz Vaqueros, the Singing Men of Las Cruces, which started in Las Cruces in 1970, will perform a 10-minute segment during the concert, Clark said.
“Included in the program will be some Sousa marches; music by American composers and/or arrangers; “Fanfare for the Common Man” by Aaron Copland’ and a piece written for the United States Air Force Bands by J. David Beasley, a Las Cruces native and graduate of Mayfield High School,” he said.
The program will last about one and one-half hours, Clark said.
“Should be a lot of enjoyment for everybody.
MVCB was started in 1986-87 by Clark, John Schutz and Mike White. The band is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. The New Horizons Band, which is directed by Schutz, formed 20 years ago.
