MESILLA VALLEY FINE ARTS GALLERY

Mesilla Valley Fine Arts Gallery features Peacock, Rutherford in May

Posted

The Mesilla Valley Fine Arts Gallery, 2470-A Calle de Guadalupe, across from the Fountain Theatre on the historic Mesilla Plaza, is featuring local artists Frank Peacock and Patricia Rutherford in May.

Peacock is the son of a New Mexico pioneer family and has lived in communities as diverse as San Francisco and Mexico City, as well as in Amish country in Pennsylvania.

As a National Landscape Painting Competition finalist, Peacock’s paintings, pastels and etchings are in private collections worldwide. Known for dramatic use of color and texture, his work has been included in museums, cultural centers and university exhibitions across the United States.

With works once dedicated to the everchanging landscape, and then the mystery of ancient American symbols and imagery, Peacock now dedicates his skills to the majesty, grace and hope intrinsic to nature’s forms.

During the past three years, Peacock has studied and painted the pecan orchards of Doña Ana County.  From the Stahmann to the Salopek to the Fletcher farms, including Fairacres’ “Awesome Woods,” his drawings and paintings express the unique personality of each orchard.

Rutherford, a contemporary realist colored pencil artist, is well versed in the use of graphite, charcoal, watercolor and pen and ink. Rutherford’s unique style allows her to highlight features and expressions in the faces of both people and animals. Through layering, mixing and blending, she can uncover the soul of her subjects.

The gallery’s newest member is artist Rhoda Winters. Drawing in class helped Winters remember what the teachers said. The Organ Mountains are in most of her earliest childhood memories. She perceived life to be an overwhelming tangle of confusion, and yet she sensed that there is an organized structure that extends from the galaxies through life in all its variety, all the way down to the structures of the individual atoms.

Winters explores the wonder of the moment, the beauty of life and the structure of the natural world in her art. She begins by painting or sketching (on location) to catch the real heights, proportions and perspective, and also takes photographs to capture the details. Then Winters rediscovers the joy and wonder of that place and moment in time.
