MESILLA VALLEY FINE ARTS GALLERY

Mesilla Valley Fine Arts Gallery features Severson, Loring in November

Posted

Mesilla Valley Fine Arts Gallery (MVFG), 2470-A Calle de Guadalupe, across from the Fountain Theatre on the historic Mesilla Plaza, will feature the work of local artists Jan Severson and Meredith Loring for the month of November.

Severson spent her professional life with a major computer company as an education consultant, MVFG said in a news release. “By accident, and with a good friend’s encouragement, she started weaving and found that it had become a passion that brought her a great sense of joy and accomplishment. While she prefers the colors of nature, you will often find her weaving with colorful reed, yarns, wood objects and beads. The beauty and diversity of New Mexico often serves as an inspiration for her art,” MVFG said.

Loring’s interest in fabrics and fiber started early when she first learned to sew, the gallery said. Loring “experimented with painting and drawing throughout her youth and early adulthood,” MVFG said. “After some tie designing and fabricating costumes for No Strings Theatre Company of Las Cruces, she decided to experiment with fabric and fiber as an artistic media. She primarily uses recycled fabric, yarns, beads and leather, along with found objects and decorative items from thrift stores, for a variety of techniques.”

First American Bank, 1553 Avenida de Mesilla, is well represented by gallery members who rotate their artwork monthly at the bank.

MVFG features the work of 30 artists in various media, including oil, acrylics, pastels, watercolor, fused glass art jewelry, woodturnings, stained glass, photography, ceramics, mixed media, decorated gourds, handmade textile weavings, art tile, fiber art, natural gemstone jewelry, colored pencil, basket weavings, charcoal, pen and ink, prints, cards and miniature paintings.

MVFG is open 10 a.m.-5 p.m. daily with limited access because of public health orders.
