MESILLA VALLEY FINE ARTS GALLERY

Mesilla Valley Fine Arts Gallery features Tugel, Zucker in November

Posted

Mesilla Valley Fine Arts Gallery (MVFAG) will feature local artists Arlene Tugel and Naida Zucker in November, the gallery said in a news release.

Tugel likes the pure, glowing color that can be achieved with watercolor, her preferred medium, MVFAG said.

“I do most of my painting ‘en plein air’ (outdoors), where I can immerse myself, both physically and emotionally, in the glorious landscapes of the West,” said Tugel, who lives in Las Cruces.

During her career as a soil scientist, Tugel studied and explored a wide variety of natural and agricultural landscapes. Her work has been shown in juried shows in Las Cruces, Albuquerque, Socorro, Deming and Pinos Altos, where she earned numerous awards, including best of show, in 2015.

Zucker, a mixed-media artist, combines gelatin monoprinting (hectography) with digital photography to produce one-of-a-kind art pieces, the gallery said. Zucker studied biology at Queens College, City University of New York and zoology at the University of Illinois, Urbana, and is a retired NMSU biology professor. Zucker has taken several Photoshop-related workshops and studied printmaking with Ouida Touchon.

MVFAG features the work of 30 artists in various media, including oil, acrylics, pastels, watercolor, fused glass art jewelry, woodturnings, stained glass, photography, ceramics, mixed media, decorated gourds, handmade textile weavings, art tile, fiber art, natural gemstone jewelry, colored pencil, basket weavings, charcoal, pen and ink, prints, cards and miniature paintings.

MVFAG, 2470-A Calle de Guadalupe, across from the Fountain Theatre on the historic Mesilla Plaza, is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.

First American Bank, 1553 Avenida de Mesilla, is well represented by gallery members who rotate their artwork monthly at the bank.
