Mobile book club combines running and love for reading

Posted

You can join Thomas Branigan Memorial Library twice a month for a mobile book club. The first run was Oct. 12. The second run is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 26.

Novices and experienced runners are welcome, as club members walk or run and chat about a new book each month.

The book selected for October is “The Long Walk,” by Stephen King. The book is available with a library card.

TBML is hosting the running club in partnership with Bluebird Running Company, a specialty running store at 300 N. Main St., on the upper story of La Esquina Plaza at the corner of Main and Las Cruces Avenue. It is owned by Zach and Michelle Gonzalez.

The Gonzalezes are both avid trail enthusiasts who met and fell in love on the trails, the City of Las Cruces said in a news release. Both are experienced road-, trail- and ultra-runners who enjoy spending time in the outdoors as much as possible.

Bluebird Running Company supports trail conservation and the protection of public lands for present and future generations, the city said. The Zach and Michelle Gonzalez donate to and work with local nonprofits like the New Mexico Rails to Trails Association, Southern New Mexico Trail Alliance and Friends of the Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks.

The second run will begin at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 26, from the front door of Bluebird Running Company. Spooky costumes and safety lights are encouraged.

From Bluebird, the 1.92 kilometer (1.193 miles) run loops into the Mesquite Historic District and then follows Spruce Street back to the Bluebird. The terrain is sidewalk and asphalt. Find a route map at www.strava.com/routes/2881989579562440370.
