The Las Cruces Museum of Art (MOA) will host Geometric Aljamía: A Cultural Transliteration, through Saturday, April 17.
Because of state public health orders, the exhibition will be open for viewing by appointment only. Call 575-528-3330 or email education@las-cruces.org to reserve a spot. Reservations must be made 24 hours in advance.
Geometric Aljamía is a cross-cultural collaboration that addresses how medieval connections between the Islamic world and Europe during the Golden Age of the Islamic Civilization (eighth-13th centuries)
continue to be relevant and vibrant in the 21st century, the museum said in a news release.
The exhibit features the work of six national and international artists: Mohammad Saleh Amin and Tamim Sahebzada (Afghanistan), Jorge Benitez and Reni Gower (United States), Hanane Korchi (Canada) and Julia Townsend (United Arab Emirates and U.S.), who bring together different styles of artwork that embrace and celebrate the concept of sacred geometry and the perfection of geometric form found in the circle and square, the museum said.
The artists use a diversity of media to express these cultural connections, using papercuts, stencils, drawings and models. Their individual artistic perspectives reflect the larger relationship that the West shares with the Middle East.
