The New Mexico Chile Association (NMCA) is hosting the New Mexico Chile Taste Off in six New Mexico communities in October. It comes to the Farmers and Crafts Market of Las Cruces, at Plaza de Las Cruces, 8:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17, the association said in a news release from Garrity Group Public Relations.
The Chile Taste Off, sponsored by Bueno Foods, offers residents “the chance to crown one farm the title of best green chile. The organization will give away 1,000 green chile tasting kits, in Las Cruces and at farmers’ and growers’ markets in Tucumcari, Los Alamos, Socorro, Albuquerque and Corrales.
“Last year’s inaugural Great New Mexico Chile Taste-Off in Socorro was a big success, attracting several hundred chile lovers from all corners of the state and beyond, and this year, due to COVID concerns, we came up with a new way for New Mexicans to taste a variety of our famous chile,” said NMCA Executive Director Joram Robbs.
The kits, available first-come, first-served at each venue, will contain 12 samples of roasted, chopped, unseasoned green chile from around the state. Guests taste each before voting for their three favorites at nmchiletastoff.com. The deadline to vote is Wednesday, Oct. 28.
The taste-off is part of NMCA’s effort to raise awareness of its New Mexico Certified Chile program, which permits participating in-state growers to use a certification mark that verifies their chile is grown in New Mexico.
Twelve New Mexico growers are competing for the title of best green chile in 2020: Grajeda Farms, Gillis Farms, Chile Connection and Adams Produce, all in Hatch; Viramontes Farms and Speir Farms, both of Deming; Rosales Farm and 5 Star Chile, both of Lemitar; Chile River Inc. of Salem; Napi of Farmington; Genesis Gardens Homestead of Tucumcari; and Bustamante Farms of Polvadera.
NMCA is a nonprofit that supports the chile industry in New Mexico and includes growers, processors and manufacturers.
