People looking to renew their relationships with New Mexico State University, or to begin a brand new one, can start with the NMSU Foundation.
“We could sit down with pretty much anybody, find out what you care about, what you are passionate about, what you want to support, and match up with that,” said Derek Dictson, the Foundation’s president. He is also NMSU’s vice president for University Advancement.
“We’re a kind of concierge for our donors to the university,” Dictson said. “We ask them, ‘How do you want to get engaged?’ and we can link them up with those opportunities.”
Volunteering also is an option, Dictson said. In addition to financial support, student groups and programs across campus are looking for people who work or have worked in a professional field and would like to serve as student advisors.
Dictson previously served as senior director of development and principal gift officer at Auburn University, and prior to that served as director of development, senior director of development and business unit manager for the Texas A&M Foundation.
Dictson has nearly two decades of professional experience in the public and private sector, including 17 years of nonprofit fundraising and management experience, according to NMSU. He has a master’s degree in public service and administration degree from Texas A&M and a bachelor’s degree in agricultural business and economics from NMSU. Dictson met his wife, Nikki, while both were students at NMSU.
“It just felt right to come back to NMSU right now and serve in this role,” Dictson said. He and the Foundation’s 40-plus staff members do their jobs “for work and for an institution that we deeply care about,” Dictson said.
