NMSU ACADEMY FOR LEARNING IN RETIREMENT

NMSU professor will highlight computing innovations in September Zoom presentations

Satyajayant “Jay” Misra, Ph.D., a professor in the New Mexico State University Department of Computer Science, will kick off the NMSU Academy for Learning in Retirement (ALR) fall schedule with four presentations in September.

Misra’s ALR series is titled “Computing Innovations that will Shape the 2020s and Beyond.”

All of his presentations will begin at 10:30 a.m. Audience members may log in as early as 10 a.m. for each presentation, said Jeffrey Brown, a member of the ALR advisory board and chair of its curriculum committee.

Here is the schedule:

  • Monday, Sept. 13: Social Media and its Impact on Disinformation: From QAnon to Vaccine Disinformation.
  • Wednesday, Sept. 15: Cybersecurity Awareness for Everyone: The Do’s, Don’ts and the Definitely Don’ts.
  • Monday, Sept. 20: Cryptocurrencies and Blockchains: The Future of our Financial and World Transactions.
  • Wednesday, Sept. 22: Our Future with A.I. and Machine Learning.

Misra joined NMSU in 2009 as an assistant professor. He received master of science degrees in information systems and physics from the Birla Institute of Technology and Science in India, and a Ph.D. in computer science from Arizona State University. Misra’s research interests include anonymity, security and survivability in networks and protocol design for wireless networks, the future Internet, blockchain and decentralized finance, and smart-grid architectures. 

Misra has more than 100 peer-reviewed publications and his research has earned more than 6,200 international citations. He served on the editorial board of IEEE Communications Surveys and Tutorials, was features editor of IEEE Wireless Communication Magazine and continues to serve as an associate editor of the IEEE Internet of Things Journal.

Misra has served on the executive committee of several major conference technical program committees. His research is funded by the National Science Foundation, the U.S. departments of Energy and Defense and Intel Labs.  He is a co-lead of the NM SMART Grid Center Networking Research Group and is one of only two professors in New Mexico to be recognized for outstanding mentorship by the New Mexico Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR).

ALR audience members may register at dacc.nmsu.edu/alr.  Registrants will be sent a Zoom link the night before each presentation.

ALR will provide two free sessions for registrants Wednesday and Thursday, Sept. 8-9 to answer questions about Zoom and provide an overview of fall programming.

The registration fee for fall 2021 is $5 for an individual presentation or $48 for all 16 presentations.
