NMSU Theatre’s ‘Hookman’ opens this weekend

Panel discussion follows March 4 performance

The New Mexico State University Theatre Department production of “Hookman” will open with a preview performance Thursday, Feb. 23, and additional performances during the next two weekends at the ASNMSU Center for the Arts, 1000 E. University Ave.

“Hookman” is directed by NMSU associate theatre professor Larissa Lury and assistant directed by Eva Cullen. The cast includes Eliza Phillips, Liliana Tuda, Joshua Jackson, Angelique Reagan, Ben Ramsey and Tiara Sibley, and understudies Emma Kenney, Alycia Herrera, Indira Rucker and Austin Reeve.

“’Hookman’ is a ride of a play,” said Lury. “It’s part comedy, part slasher horror, part truthful moving story. The play’s characters “are college students, grappling with all of the things you might expect to encounter at college, as well as some things you might not see coming,” Lury said.

“The cast is doing stylistically challenging work incredibly well,” she said. “They are an ensemble to be reckoned with, and the way they support each other on and off-stage makes them able to go where the play goes, and makes the process in the rehearsal room full of play, fun and focus.

“Somehow, playwright Lauren Yee adeptly manages to get us to face some of our biggest fears, and some of the ways we are most capable of hurting ourselves and each other, while she makes us laugh, deliciously afraid, and fully entertained,” Lury said.

The production will include two post-show talks, Lury said. There will be a question-and-answer session with the cast and creative team following the Thursday, Feb. 23, preview performance. A panel discussion with Zooey Sophia Pook, Ph.D., and members of NMSU’s Asian and Pacific Islander (API) Student Support will follow the Saturday, March 4, performance.

The “Hookman” design team includes guest set and projection designer Hsi-An Chen, costume designer Chloe Cappuccilli, sound designer Jim Wilkinson, as well as student designers Alia Belinte (lighting), Vance Cook (props) and assistant set designer Camren Vugteveen. The production team is being led by student Stage Manager Casey Standridge and Assistant Stage Manager Reagan Szulc.

Lury said the play runs approximately 75 minutes and contains adult content. For more information about the content, call 575-646-5122.

The preview performance begins at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 23. Additional performances are 7:30 p.m. Fridays, Feb. 24 and March 3 and Saturdays, Feb. 25 and March 4; and 2 p.m. Sunday, March 5.

For the preview performance only, tickets are $10 and all students – including high school students – get in free. Tickets for all other performances are $20 general admission, $18 for students, $16 for seniors and military and $10 for children under age 18.
