NEW MEXICO STATE UNIVERSITY JAZZ ENSEMBLE

NMSU’s Jazz Ensemble, Jazz Lab Band combine for Oct. 6 ‘Autumn in New Mexico’

The New Mexico State University Jazz Ensemble and the Jazz Lab Band come together for “a killer program” that includes music written and arranged by jazz pianist Bill Potts (1928-2005), said NMSU assistant professor of trumpet and jazz Jacob Dalager.

The free concert,” Autumn in New Mexico,” will begin at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 6, in Atkinson Recital Hall in the NMSU Music Building, 1075 N. Horseshoe St. on the NMSU campus.

The program will include “The First Circle,” by Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays, arranged by Bob Curnow; “Big Swing Face,” “SHHHHH!” and “555 Feet High,” by Potts and “Summertime,” by George Gershwin, as arranged by Potts; “The Blues Machine,” by Sammy Nestico; and “Torque,” by Alan Baylock.

“The reason we're doing so much music by Bill Potts is that when we go to Roswell Jazz Fest (RJF) (Oct. 12-16; visit www.roswelljazz.org), we're going to be playing with some alumni of the Bill Potts Big Band, including Chuck Redd and John Allred, as well as Ricky Malachi and the legendary Houston Person,” Dalager said.

RJT “is mostly pros and I believe we're the only college band to be invited. On the morning of Thursday, Oct. 13, the pros are going to put on a 'School of Jazz' workshop for us, and clinic our playing as well as rehearse with us for our performance. We're playing Oct. 13 in the afternoon, and they're going to be bussing in all the middle and high school band students from the region to come hear us play,” Dalager said. “Then in the evening, we get to relax and listen to the pros do their thing. On Friday morning, Oct. 14, on our way back we're planning to play in Alamogordo for the music students there.”

Dalager said the NMSU musicians will perform the same program in Roswell that will perform at the Oct. 6 concert in Las Cruces.
