The Community Foundation of Southern New Mexico and United Way of Southern New Mexico have launched a Nonprofit Emergency Fund to support nonprofit organizations that experience loss of funds due to the COVID-19 health pandemic.
The fund is designed to assists nonprofits due to a community need, natural disaster and/or response to overwhelming loss of operational revenues. The fund will be managed and awarded through a volunteer committee.
Grant funds will be available for any 501(c)3 serving Doña Ana County as well as Hidalgo, Sierra, Otero, Grant, Lincoln and Luna Counties, with an organizational budget at or below $500,000. Applications for funding will be available April 1 on the Community Foundation website (www.cfsnm.org). Any donations to the fund before April 1 will be matched dollar-for-dollar, up to $1,000.
“These are uncertain times in our community, and right now our mission to serve, connect and support southern New Mexico is more important than ever,” said Terra V. Winter, President and CEO of the Community Foundation of Southern New Mexico. “We are moved by the generosity of our friends and neighbors who wish to help those impacted by the health pandemic, and we’re thankful for the opportunity to partner with the United Way to make our impact even greater.”
Public health experts, the Centers for Disease Control, and New Mexico Department of Health advise that social distancing is the most effective strategy for mitigating the spread of COVID-19. Because of this, numerous fundraising events have been cancelled, and programs have suspended operation at least through April 10 to maximize social distancing and minimize spread of the virus.
“Emergency assistance is an integral part of our mission at the United Way,” said Amanda Morales, Executive Director for the United Way of Southwest New Mexico. “Our efforts to mobilize the caring power of our community are only made possible with collaboration. Our hope with the fund is to help sustain those organizations doing important work in the region, so they can keep serving our community even in times of crisis.”
