Oñate champ helps Iowa college to first-ever wrestling win

Posted

2020 Oñate High School graduate Angelita Altamirano became the first girls’ state wrestling champion in New Mexico history earlier this year, and now she has achieved the same record in college.

“Angelita bumped up two weight classes to wrestle 116 for us Dec. 9 and secured the first match win in our program history,” said William Penn University (WPU) Women’s Wrestling Head Coach Tucker Black. “Angelita’s high pace and mat awareness made the difference in her match. We’re looking forward to what she can do at lower weight classes.”

WPU, located in Oskaloosa, Iowa, won four matches to secure victory in its first ever women’s wrestling meet, winning 18-17 at home against Indian Hills Community College.

Altamirano won her match, 11-7.

Altamirano, who graduated from OHS with a 3.9 GPA, is a computer science major at WPU. She turned 19 in November.
