An officer-involved shooting is under investigation.
Las Cruces Police and an incident task force are investigating a shooting that occurred around 7 p.m. Thursday, March 13, and injured an armed man, according to police.
Police report that they were called to respond to a man armed with a gun in the 500 block of south Main Street. When an officer arrived, the suspect allegedly fled and led the officer on a short foot pursuit.
During the pursuit, the officer discharged at least one round and struck the suspect, according to police. The suspect fell to the ground in the 800 block of south Main Street. Police located a firearm near where the suspect fell, the police report.
The suspect was detained and transported to a local hospital. Police have not reported the extent of the suspect’s injuries. The Las Cruces Police officer was not injured.
The department has put the officer on administrative leave pending further findings from the investigation, which is standard procedure.
The shooting is being investigated by an officer-involved incident task force which includes detectives from New Mexico State Police, the Las Cruces Police Department, Doña Ana County Sheriff's Office and New Mexico State University Police.
