Bulletin report

Detectives with the Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Department Criminal Investigations Division are investigating the alleged shooting death of a 59-year-old man.

At approximately 3 p.m. Wednesday, deputies were dispatched to a field off N.M. 478 in Berino near mile marker six where the victim had allegedly been shot. According to detectives, the man had apparently suffered at least one gunshot wound to the torso.

A second man, who deputies suspect was the alleged shooter, was seen leaving the area in a vehicle that was subsequently abandoned on a ditch.

With the assistance of Las Cruces Police Department K9 units, U.S. Border Patrol agents and officers with the Anthony Police Department, deputies were able to locate the suspect who allegedly tried to hide in a field about a mile from the crime scene. He was taken into custody and transported to the Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Department for questioning.

The names of both men are expected to be released Thursday morning, pending notification of family and initial interviews.
