Online Donations Still Accepted for ‘Stuff the Bus’ Campaign

Posted

Online donations are still being collected for the Stuff the Bus Radiothon fundraiser, which will help support students at home while in-person learning is on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The campaign began July 31 and has raised more than $27,000. Bravo Mic Communications, who sponsored the fundraiser for Las Cruces Public Schools, is covering credit card fees for online donations. Contributions can be made through Aug. 31 at https://lascrucestoday.com/stuffthebus.

Stuff the Bus is an annual school supply drive that had to be modified in response to public health orders related to COVID-19. Prior to 2020, Stuff the Bus rallied area businesses and government agencies to help collect school supplies from the community in giant cardboard school busses. This year, monetary donations were solicited to reduce community contact in compliance with social distancing requirements.

"We are so grateful to our community for their continued support of Stuff the Bus,” said Brigitte Zigelhofer, who helped organize the initial Radiothon outside the LCPS Administrative Offices on July 31. “This initiative will help bridge the gap for our students who need supplies for both home and in-person learning and headphones to help them focus in a virtual learning environment.”

Students started classes Aug. 12 in the Red Phase, which means all grade levels are attending school fully online. Computers and tablets have been assigned to students who needed them, and additional devices have been ordered to fill the need in the LCPS district. These devices will be purchased with other funds, but headphones and school supplies are still a need.

According to the New Mexico Public Education Department, some districts may be able to bring students back into classrooms in the hybrid or Yellow Phase after the Labor Day holiday. That decision will be left up to each district based on current case numbers and other gating criteria.
