Parks and Recreation Department’s Out-of-School Time featured in national 'Lights on Afterschool'

Posted

The Parks and Recreation Department’s Youth Services is joining The BOOST (Borderland Out-Of-School Time) Network for the nationwide celebration of “Lights on Afterschool” on Oct. 22 for a virtual event showcasing the great work that afterschool programs provide for kids in the borderland community.

“Out-of-School Time” programs, that include After School & Summer programs, Weed and Seed Programs and Teen Connection, have adapted to the needs of local students during the pandemic, most notably by providing much needed tutoring and learning sessions as they navigate virtual school,” said Robert Nunez, Administrator for Youth Services. “’Lights on Afterschool’ will showcase our program as well as celebrate the importance of all afterschool programs in the border community. We are proud to be a part of this event.”

The community is invited to watch “Lights on Afterschool” at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 22 by registering for the virtual ZOOM event at http://bit.ly/BOOSTAfterschool.

According to the national event website, “Lights On Afterschool” was launched in October 2000 and “is the only nationwide event celebrating afterschool programs and their important role in the lives of children, families and communities. The effort has become a hallmark of the afterschool movement and generates media coverage across the country each year.” To see activities happening nationwide, go to http://www.afterschoolalliance.org/loa.cfm.
