What do you see as the top infrastructure needs for the district?
Of the highest concern for the district are the projects identified in our upcoming bond election which can be found on our website. This includes a renovation of Mayfield High School, which is a specific concern of mine, as well as safety and security upgrades to all campus buildings. It also includes roof and play structure improvements at various campuses.
What would you do to help make sure each campus is safe for kids to go to school?
Beyond the newly implemented cameras, entry system software, and weapon detection systems, a robust investment in mental health supports would be a key strategy.
What policies or programs would you support to address bullying and cyberbullying in the district?
The recently passed Policy JICFA was a collaborative and well thought out policy revision that factored in the changing dynamics around cyberbullying to allow the district to better address these issues. While it's a good start we still need to focus on education efforts so that students better understand the impacts of their actions.
What are some new classes or changes to curriculum that you would like to see?
The district is working to provide pathways for students that allows them to reach their academic and career goals. A specific focus of mine is creating opportunities for more students to enroll in Career and Technical Education. A big piece of this work is securing funding for the construction of a CTE center to serve students interested in this academic path. I also support our current efforts to strengthen our methods around reading and math instruction.
What are some of your top priorities when it comes to creating a budget?
I work to make sure that we are investing in classrooms and schools. This includes pay for staff, classroom materials, technology and training opportunities. It also includes an investment in programs such as our School Based Health Centers which are critical to so many of our students. I also look for continued investments in our community schools as they have proven to be a wise investment of public dollars.
Can you provide us with a quick bio which includes your age and current job/ job prior to taking office?
I currently serve as executive director of Friends of Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks, a non-profit that works on conservation of public lands as well as provides after school programming for K-12 students throughout Doña Ana County. I am 44 years old.
Why are you running?
I am running because I care about public education and the mission to provide every student in Las Cruces with a top tier education.
What do you think are the biggest challenges facing Las Cruces Public Schools?
Funding continues to be an issue facing LCPS. Of particular concern is funding from the federal government that supports several critical programs within LCPS (special education, after school programs, teacher training, and support for emergent bilingual education). The loss of funding in these areas would have a significant impact not on just those specific students and programs, but on students throughout the district.
What do you hope to do to address these issues?
I'll continue to listen to those closest to the issues facing our district and families. This includes students, parents, staff, teachers, administrators and community members. I'll work to understand these issues with the depth and understanding that our role as elected officials and policy makers requires. I will advocate for our schools with local and federal elected leaders as they all play a significant role in our success.
