Headlining this year’s Mayor’s Jazz Fest is New York based sax player, vocalist and songwriter Paula Atherton. Local jazz musicians The Windup will open the show.

The Mayor’s Jazz Fest is a free family event that kicks off the Parks & Recreation Department’s Music in the Park Series featuring performances by local, regional, and national acts each Sunday from June 5 through August 28. Artists and locations will be announced soon.

Headliner Paula Atherton has shared the stage with such contemporary jazz notables as The Rippingtons, Nick Colionne, Chuck Loeb, Cindy Bradley, Brian Simpson, Four80East, David Sanborn, Bob James, Marc Antoine, Hiroshima, Gerald Albright and Chieli Minucci.

Atherton has enjoyed nine Billboard Top 30 charting singles. “Can You Feel It,” hit No. 1 on Mediabase, No. 1 on the Smooth Jazz Network for four weeks, and No. 1 on Billboard for three weeks. Other charting singles include “Sassy Strut,” “Herbie,” “Between You & Me,” “My Song For You,” “Into the Night,” “Just Can’t Stop,” “Keep it Comin,” and “Summer Song,” which was No. 1 on Billboard for two weeks, No. 1 on the Smooth Jazz Network, and No. 1 on Mediabase, as well as No. 14 on Billboards’ 2021-year end chart, and No. 7 on the Smooth Jazz Network 2021-year end chart.

Atherton also was featured on Cindy Bradley’s single, “Girl Talk,” which hit No. 2 on Billboard. Paula was nominated “Best Artist of 2020” by the Smooth Jazz Network.

Atherton also does music therapy work for “Music that Heals,” an organization that brings music to autistic children, cancer patients, people in hospice, and other populations. Paula is also on the board of the F2F Foundation in Houston, Texas, which promotes jazz workshops, performances, and jazz education. F2F also helps provide musical instruments to students whose families can’t afford them.
